The Bulldogs recently returned from San Jose where they competed in the Tony Reyes Memorial. The tournament consisted of 5 regular team games on Saturday and 10- Baker games on Sunday. After the scheduled Baker games, the teams were placed in a single elimination bracket.

At the conclusion of Saturday’s teams games, the Bulldogs were in first place a mere 13 pins in front of UC Davis and roughly 100 pins in front of San Jose.

Saturday night the players and coaches competed in the random draw, two game Scotch Doubles event. This event is one of the best things about bowling on the west coast. The random draw gives the student-athletes and coaches a great opportunity to get to know people from other programs and really ties us together as a community. It’s perfect that we hold this event at the Tony Reyes Memorial tournament as it epitomized the character Tony carried in every way.

After the 10-Baker games Sunday morning, the Bulldogs were able to increase their lead over 2nd place San Jose to almost 200 pins, securing the 1st place ranking points.

Now, on to the bracket. The Bulldogs faced Ottawa AZ in the first round and were able to hold them off 3-0 setting up a match with the #3 seed UC Davis. After going down 2-0, the Dogs battled back to tie the match 2-2 before losing a nail biter in the 5th game. UC Davis advanced to the final against the San Jose State’s JV where they would lose 3-1. Congrats to the JV from San Jose for winning the Tony Reyes trophy.

It was a solid performance for the team which competed without Freshman Vincent Luong, still recovering from a broken bone in his foot and Nikki Samano who missed the tournament to be home for the weekend.

Individually, freshman Neil Weinstein had his best performance of the season averaging 211 on a very challenging oil pattern and finishing 2nd overall. Also finishing in the top 10 were Junior Spencer Norvell, 9th-189 avg and Junior Ben Walmer, 10th-189 avg.

Next up is the 54 Annual Hoosier Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana the weekend of February 18-19th.

Equipment in play in San Jose…

Spencer Norvell- Track Stealth, Defender Hybrid, Eruption Pearl, and Purple Hammer

Ben Walmer- Columbia Speed, Brunswick Prism Hybrid and Brunswick Defender Solid.

Neil Weinstein- Brunswick Defender Solid, Brunswick Knockout Black n Blue, Brunswick Melee Carbon

Once again, great support from our club parents Clark and Jill Walmer, Terry Weinstein, Steven and Tina Norvell, Cornell and Ophelia Hammons Cindy Szeto and Andy Luong were pulling for us all weekend. Special thanks to Stephen for running the live-stream this trip!

As always, we couldn’t do this without our sponsors, The Brunswick Corporation and Vise Inc.

Go Bulldogs!
