The Fresno State Bulldogs Varsity and JV bowling teams participated in the West Coast Collegiate Team Championships I&II, held at their home venue, BULLDOG BOWL in Fresno, CA.
On Saturday, the varsity performed well during the qualifying rounds, averaging 202.5 on the 46ft PBA Petraglia Pattern. The Bulldogs' secured the second seed behind Grand Canyon University, earning a first-round bye in the single-elimination bracket. The Bulldog JV team earned the 11th seed out of qualifying and drew the 6th seed, UC Davis Varsity in the first round of the bracket. Our JV team won the first game and the UCD varsity won the 2nd, forcing a roll off. Our JV was able to win the roll-off earning the right to face the #3 seed UNLV Varsity in the Round of 8. Once again, the 11th seeded Bulldog JV would prove to be a difficult opponent winning game one. However, UNLV prevailed in game two to once again force a sudden death roll-off. This time, UNLV prevailed in the 2nd frame of the roll off to advance to the Round of 4.
The Varsity faced San Jose's JV in in the Round of 8. After dispatching San Jose's JV 2-0, they advanced to face UNLV in the Round of 4. Unfortunately, the battle with UNLV would prove to be the end of the Bulldogs day and UNLV continued it's momentum, defeating San Jose State's Varsity in the final in an exciting roll-off. Congrats to the Rebels for winning the Elimination Bracket and congrats to Grand Canyon for earning the first-place power points for day 1.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman Zachary Oliver-Davis with an average of 238.6 (2nd individually), junior Neil Weinstein with an average of 238 (3rd), and freshman Dominic Ortiz with an average of 205 (10th).
On Sunday, the teams competed on the 40ft PBA Monacelli Pattern in a match play format tournament. The varsity team came out strong winning their first 8 matches; however, after two consecutive losses, they needed to win the final match against their own JV team to clinch the trophy. While the Bulldog JV stepped up the the challenge, the varsity team ultimately won the match and the tournament, also taking first place in the power rankings. Well done, Bulldogs! The team was led once again by freshman Zachary Oliver-Davis, averaging 230.6 (1st individually), graduate student Spencer Norvell, averaging 212.7 (6th), and both senior Jarrett Smith and freshman Bryce Nakunz, who averaged 207.7 (tie for 9th overall).
