As the new semester starts, the Bulldogs traveled to Phoenix, AZ to battle it out in the desert for the Devil’s Duel and the Antelope Shoot-out. After the long travel on Friday, most of our players and assistant coach bowled the mini-eliminator that was held at Glenfair Lanes, the host center for the weekend. Although none of us did particularly well in the eliminator, we did have one of the kids, Nolan Byers, win a free Brunswick bowling ball from the event! Unfortunately, we also had Spencer Norvell pull a hamstring, which kept him from competing throughout the weekend.
Day 1 was competed on a 44' pattern at Glenfair Lanes in Phoenix, AZ. After the dust settled, GCU took home the win on Saturday. They also won the single-elimination bracket. The Bulldog varsity had a rough qualifying block in which they took 5th, but bowled much better in the bracket play. We beat University of Texas - San Antonio in 5 games total pins in the first round of the eliminator. This was San Antonio’s first west coast event. We then lost to GCU in the 2nd round.
Individually, the Bulldogs were led by Vincent Luong (209 average) who finished 12th individually and Nolan Byers who finished 16th with a 200 average.
Sunday's competition was competed on a more difficult 40' pattern. Once again, the Bulldog varsity finished in 5th place. Newcomer University of Texas - San Antonio took home the title. Congrats to them! Grand Canyon University finished 2nd again, only 90 pins back.
In the second tournament, the Bulldogs were led by Nolan Byers who finished 15th with a 199 average. Also, shout-out to our female, Clarissa Samano, who finished 2nd individually on both days for the women.
Equipment used.....
Vincent Luong - Brunswick Mindset, Track Sensor, and Track Kinetic Black/Ice
Nolan Byers - Radical Double Cross, Brunswick Defender Hybrid and Columbia 300 Power Torq.
Clarissa Samano - Brunswick Mindset, Brunswick Teal Rhino, Hammer Widow Ghost
Special thanks goes out to Andy Luong for getting us the bagels and pizza throughout the tournament weekend. It was greatly appreciated by the players and coaches! One more shoutout to the Weinstein’s for providing the Bulldogs team dinner at Buca di Beppo on Saturday night!
As always, couldn't do this without the support of our sponsors Brunswick, Genesis and VISE. Thank you for your continuing support of our program.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the Sin City Open and Rebel Classic hosted by the UNLV at the Orleans in Las Vegas the weekend of January 26th and 28th.
GO BULLDOGS!
